Giulietta Masina, attrice e sposa di Federico Fellini è il racconto dell’interprete femminile forse più misteriosa del cinema italiano; definita dalla critica inglese “Female-Chaplin” e gratificata dallo stesso Charlie Chaplin del complimento più esaltante: “She is the actress I adimire the most”, è l’attrice che ammiro di più. Sposata con il più famoso regista del mondo, ha conquistato sotto la sua direzione due premi Oscar, con La Strada (1954) e Le Notti di Cabiria (1957) diventando un’icona universale, ancora oggi l’attrice italiana forse più amata e ricordata. Se su Fellini si sono riversati fiumi di inchiostro, di Giulietta si sa ben poco, e poco si è scritto. Era forse come la luna illuminata dal sole, di cui si conosce sempre e soltanto una sola faccia. Ma l’altra? Quella nascosta, quella che non si vede? Nel fondo del proprio cuore Giulietta era più Gelsomina o più Cabiria? Sfrontata, ingenua, guascona, indomabile, oppure vagheggina, dolce, poetica, persa dietro le illusioni, un po’ buffona e un po’ bambina? Nata astrologicamente nel terzo giorno del segno dei Pesci era naturalmente bivalente: gentile e generosa, ma anche riservata e gelosa della sua intimità. Paziente ma indomita. Possedeva immaginazione fervida e allo stesso tempo notevole capacità di osservazione. Era intensamente appas-sionata ma anche portata all’intellettualismo e alla spiritualità. Per raccontare Giulietta con l’indispensabile empatia, l’autore si è infilato nell’intercapedine tra maschera e volto, tra persona e personaggio; ha cercato di districare la matassa riprendendo il bandolo da capo e seguendo la traccia che proprio Fellini ci suggerisce, non solo con La Strada ma con tutta la propria opera, quando ammette che il suo vissuto si è trovato interamente nel cinema: “Guardate i miei film, la vita di un artista è in quello che fa”.

Gianfranco Angelucci lives and works in Rome as a film director, scriptwriter, advertising expert, and TV producer. The turning point in his professional career and personal life has been his encounter with Federico Fellini in the 1970s, followed by a twenty-year long association with the Italian director.

During all this time he worked alongside Fellini in various capacities, but mostly as a screenwriter. In 1987 he authored the screenplay for Fellini’s Intervista, recipient of a special prize at the Cannes Film Festival and the First Prize at the Moscow Film Festival.

Angelucci is the author of “Secrets and lyes of Federico Fellini” and has edited various publications on Fellini’s works, among them Amarcord, Casanova, And the Ship Sails On, and Ginger and Fred. He has also edited a photo-book on La Dolce Vita, and another one on all Fellini’s films titled Un Regista a Cinecittà. As a director, he produced numerous TV reports and a two-episode homage to Fellini, respectively titled Fellini nel Cestino and I Protagonisti di Fellini.
